Our Avignon Sun Bonnet hat marries South of France romance with chic city style. Inspired by one of our favorite movie heroines, Princess Grace of Monaco, you can surely imagine her driving along with Cary Grant wearing this hat. The shape is reminiscent of a classic 1930’s sun hat – crafted in finely woven straw giving it a light, flattering feel and weight. We have added the most beautiful bohemian antique hand embroidered silk band reclaimed and crafted from a Canton Shawl. Because we believe great design is all in the details – we have finished it with a delicate antique French paste Georgian period buckle. One size fits most with this ultra feminine and timeless hat.

History of the Canton Shawl : In 1565 the Manilla galleon trade route from Manilla, through the northern Pacific around Japan opened the door for the Spanish King to allow Filipino’s to trade with China. A large square silk “Canton Shawl” with elaborate embroidery arrived in the Philipines, and soon became known as the Manton de Manilla. Early embroidered themes of frogs, Chinese people, scenes, birds and flowers transitioned into floral and foliage themes that were popular in Seville. Fashionable Spanish women wanted deep fringes to be added around the borders so there would be movement of the fringes, and call attention to the wearer.
